Tin Dog Prepares For Their 6th Anniversary

There aren’t a whole lot of breweries in Seattle that focus primarily on Belgians, Sours and Farmhouse/Wild Ales. Some of the best known are probably Holy Mountain Brewing and Urban Family Brewing (who has returned to Ballard – opening tomorrow at noon). A few others with a similar focus have opened fairly recently including Best of Hands Barrelhouse a year ago and the just opened Fair Isle Brewing in Ballard. However, there’s another brewery in Seattle that has been quietly producing Belgians, Sours and Farmhouse/Wild Ales for nearly 6 years now. That brewery is Tin Dog Brewing in South Park.

Since opening in 2014 they’ve kept a somewhat low profile. It took them a couple of years to begin bottling, but they’ve been packaging more and more beers and just this week started sending out kegs to local craft beer bars. They have also recently rebranded themselves as a blendery (there will be no name change, however). In their own words:

Tin Dog Brewing’s Art Series Presents: Precious Metal Clay Crafting With Amanda Caps

Arts and crafts was never really my thing. I’m creative. I used to play guitar all the time, but don’t ask me to draw anything. It would come out looking like it was made by a kid in the 4th grade. I was a bit better at working with clay, sculpting and using a pottery wheel, but I only dabbled a bit and never really got into it long term. These days, I let my creativity come out in my writing instead, but I still wish I was a better at drawing.

Do you have a gift for the artistic – or would you like to work on your artistic skills? If so, Tin Dog Brewing Company has an event coming up that might interest you. On Wednesday, March 18th, Tin Dog’s Art Series will have local artist Amanda Caps in house to host a class on creating pieces of art using Precious Metal Clay (PMC), which is clay infused with copper or brass. You can use this special clay to create your own pieces of metal jewelry to keep for yourself or gift to others.

Fair Isle Brewing Is Open For Business

I often hear the question; Has Seattle reached the saturation point for new breweries? I don’t think there’s an easy answer. Sure, Seattle is packed with over 330 breweries (many concentrated in Ballard and the South End), but is that too many? It depends on several factors: Location, size, the quality and uniqueness of the beers they produce, etc.

Seattle’s newest brewery: Fair Isle Brewing, opens their doors to the public today at 3 pm. Will they have what it takes to succeed in the saturated Seattle craft beer scene? I believe they will. Fair Isle is taking a slightly different approach with their taproom layout (details below), and will focus primarily on Saisons and other Wild Ales.

Bretta Tangerine Is Arriving Now From Firestone Walker

I wasn’t always a fan of Sour Ales.  They weren’t a big thing when I first got into craft beer back in the 80’s but, since first discovering them several years ago, I can’t get enough. Super sour or just mildly tart, fruited or not, I’ve come to appreciate a wide variety of Sour Ales.

They weren’t the first Sour Ales I’ve ever had, but I’ve enjoyed just about every sour offering from Firestone Walker Brewing Company‘s Barrelworks series. Each year they keep expanding their wild/sour portfolio and this year is no exception.  Say hello to the newest offering from Barrelworks: Bretta Tangerine.  Brewed with Murcott tangerines, Bretta Tangerine is the latest beer to build on Barrelworks’ signature Bretta Weisse base beer.

Urban Family Brewing Is Coming (Back) To Ballard

I can remember when Urban Family Brewing Company wasn’t yet a brewing company.  They were a craft beer bar on Ballard Ave NW, pretty much across the street from The Noble Fir.  As a craft beer bar, I only visited them a couple of times before they closed and moved across Salmon Bay to their current location on 26th Avenue West in Magnolia.

I think Urban Family is a bit homesick for Ballard though. They’ve just announced that, later this year, they will be moving the brewery to a new location, back in Ballard.  Sentiment isn’t the only reason for the move though.  They’re starting to outgrow their current location, and their new spot in Ballard will give them more room to expand, including more space for barrel aging and additional outdoor seating.

Tin Dog Brewing Brings Home The Gold (And The Silver And The Bronze)

On February 10th of this year, a small brewery in Seattle’s South Park neighborhood – one some of you may not have heard of before – celebrated their latest anniversary.  That brewery is Tin Dog Brewing Company and they’ve bee operating quietly on the other side of the Duwamish since February 2014.

Specializing in Belgian-style beers, including sour/wild beers and aged, blended/mixed cluture styles, Tin Dog has been honing their craft, and their work has paid off.  I’d like to offer my congratulations to Tin Dog Brewing Company for taking home Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in this year’s wild sour beer category at the Washington Beer Awards and Brewer’s Choice Awards, taking home Gold, Silver and Bronze.

Firestone Walker’s Barrelworks Unveils UnderCurrants

Wild and Sour Ales have really grown in popularity in the last few years. For the uninitiated they can seem intimidating to approach at first but, once you get past that initial uncertainly and try a few different Wild and Sour styles, most people find something they really enjoy.

Firestone Walker Brewing Company‘s Barrelworks is no stranger to Wild and Sour Ales. They’ve put out several extremely popular selections like Agrestic (American Wild Red Ale), Krieky Bones (Wild Ale Fermented With Sour Cherries), SLOambic (Wild Ale Fermented With Blackberries) and more.  Now Barrelworks is ready to release the latest in their Wild Ales Series: UnderCurrants (Wild Ale Fermented With Black Currants).

Firestone Walker’s Barrelworks Releases Bretta Rose Batch No. 005

Are you a fan of sour or wild ales?  Not everyone is and that’s just fine by me.  Fewer fans simply means there’s more for those of us who do enjoy them to drink.  For those who do enjoy them though, we have some breweries here in the Northwest who excel at making incredible sour and wild ales, including Holy Mountain, Urban Family, Engine House Number 9, Cascade and more.

Though I’m a huge fan of Washington (and Oregon) brewed beers, I don’t hide the fact that several of my favorite breweries are, in fact, from California including one of my all time favorites: Firestone Walker Brewing Company.  Firestone’s Barrelworks Wile Ale program has it’s roots all the way back in 2006, when Barrelworks’ Master Blender, Jim Crooks, took a trip to Belgium to work with Lauren Salazar (New Belgium Brewing).  He returned with some dregs from one of their 15 or so Foeders and placed it into a French oak wine barrel of freshly filtered and un-carbonated Firestone DBA. This experiment was the foundation of what would eventually become Barrelworks’/Firestone Walker’s Agrestic Ale.  Continue reading
