Bale Breaker Selected to Brew the Official 2017 Seattle Beer Week Beer

Winter is still upon us (it was damn cold out last night!), but Spring is right around the corner.  We’re even starting to see some early Spring Seasonals returning.  That means Seattle Beer Week can’t be far off.  In fact, there’s less than 2 months until the start of Seattle Beer Week 2017, which runs from May 4th through May 14th, 2017.

Each year, a different brewery (or breweries) are selected to brew the official Seattle Beer Week beer. This year, that honor falls to Bale Breaker Brewing Company from Yakima, Washington.  Get ready to enjoy plenty of Fresh Off The Farm IPA. Packed with farm-fresh hops, of course, Fresh Off The Farm IPA will be available in cans and on draught throughout Washington for the 9th annual Seattle Beer Week (SBW9).

Nearing The Halfway Point Of Seattle Beer Week #8 – UPDATED

20160513_092720

Today, Monday May 16th, is day number 5 of Seattle Beer Week #8, which means we’re about halfway through.  Things kicked off last Thursday at Reuben’s Brews with the official tapping of the first keg of the official Seattle Beer Week beer: Daily Pale, followed by the opening night pub crawl.  I had to drop by Reuben’s, of course, for the kickoff and then found my way to Beveridge Place Pub for stop #3 on the crawl.

Since then, the events have been coming pretty much non-stop.  The highlights for me so far have been the Underberg Back In Black Stout Fest at Brouwer’s Cafe, Satanic Metal C.O.W. Night at Toronado and, even though I had to leave a bit early, Firestone Walker & Holy Mountain last night at The Pine Box.

Seattle Beer Week Kicks Off Today

I don’t know about you, but I’ve had a pretty crazy last week or so leading up to Seattle Beer Week #8.  Between being busy at work (both of them), still mourning a bit for our dog, Bailei, and trying to plan out my Seattle Beer Week 2016 schedule (picking from, literally, hundreds of events), I’ve barely had time to breathe.

The event list for Seattle Beer Week seems to get a bit bigger each year.  There are always a few days where there are at least 2 or 3 different events all happening at the same time on opposite ends of town, so you have to make a choice.  Hitting every single event is absolutely impossible (and severe liver abuse!), so you have to pick your battles (or is it bottles?)

Now, it’s here.  Seattle Beer Week kicks off this evening at Reuben’s Brews in Ballard.  They’ll be open at noon today, but the official opening ceremony for Seattle Beer Week won’t take place until 5 pm.  The first keg of Daily Pale, the official beer of Seattle Beer Week #8, will be tapped and the Mayor’s Proclamation will be read.

Craft Beer Monger’s Picks For Seattle Beer Week 2016 – UPDATED

SBW8Logo1

I’ve been a fan of great craft beer ever since having my very first craft beer (a Red Tail Ale from Mendocino Brewing Company, if memory serves).  However, I didn’t really immerse myself into the Seattle Craft Beer scene until sometime in 2010.  Before that I was, of course, still enjoying craft beer, but my journalistic focus was geared more towards the console video game market.  I used to operate a couple of console gaming review sites (focusing mostly on Xbox), which are now closed down.

That means I haven’t been attending Seattle Beer Week for as many years as some of you out there.  The first time I attended a Seattle Beer Week event (and actually knew that I was doing so), was back during Seattle Beer Week #4 in 2010, and the first Seattle Beer Week I ever wrote about was Seattle Beer Week #5 in 2011.  Right now, that sure seems like a long time ago.

Now, with 2016 upon us, we’re just one week away from the kickoff of Seattle Beer Week #8.  That means it’s time once again for me to give you my picks for what sound like the best events at this year’s Seattle Beer Week, just as I’ve done each year since 2012.

Counterbalance Launches Two New Beers For Seattle Beer Week #7

Breweries open at such a rapid pace in Seattle area these days, it can be difficult to keep up.  In just the past few months we’ve gotten Holy Mountain, Outer Planet, Ghostfish, Chainline and more.  One of my favorite new kids on the block, and conveniently located for me in the South end of Seattle is Counterbalance Brewing Company.

I first told you about them back in February, when they were just ‘officially’ opening their doors.  My early favorites were their Bad Wolf Dark Ale and their Kushetka Imperial Stout. A barrel aged version of Kushetka should be coming soon.  In the meantime, however, Counterbalance has two more beer coming your way during Seattle Beer Week #7 (SBW#7).  Get ready for Storm Cycle Cascadian Dark Ale, which Counterbalance brewed in collaboration with Flying Bike Cooperative Brewery (who just hired their very first head brewer), and Counterbalance’s new seasonal Wheat Ale.

Reuben’s Brews Is Ready For Their Big Reveal

ReubensBrewsNewLogo1

Back in Early march, I told you about Reuben’s Brews‘ plans to expand.  They’d reached their capacity and couldn’t grow any farther in their current space and current brewing system.  In late March, I shared with you the exciting news that Dean Mochizuki, former head brewer at Pike Brewing Company, had left Pike to join Reuben’s Brews as their new Head Experimental Brewer.

Now, just two short months later, I’m excited to be able to share the news that Reuben’s Brews is ready to reveal their new brewery and taproom during this year’s Seattle Beer Week (SBW#7).

Craft Beer Monger’s Picks For Seattle Beer Week #7

SBW2015Logo3

Seattle Beer Week #7 kicks off in just over 2 weeks.  As of this morning, April 20th, there are over 220 different events listed for this year’s festivities.  That’s incredible.  Just two weeks ago, when I gave you my tips for enjoying Seattle Beer Week #7 on a budget, there were 180 events listed.  As you can see, that number has grown significantly.

Now, with majority of this year’s events listed, I thought it would be a good time to review all the choices and present you with what I believe will be the best events to hit during each day of Seattle Beer Week.  Unlike my budget friendly article from two weeks ago, however, this list of events will disregard cost and focus entirely on fun.

Seattle Beer Week #7 On A Budget

SBW2015Logo1

Seattle Beer Week (SBW) can be a costly endeavor.  Depending on how many different events you plan on attending, in addition to any special dinners or other ticketed events, keeping up with the Jones’ can become a costly prospect this time of year for Seattle area craft beer fans.  This year’s SBW kind of snuck up on me a bit.  I can’t believe it starts in just one month.

Back in 2013 I ran the first version of this article: Seattle Beer Week On A Budget.  In that article, I told you about one event each day during SBW #5 that would be kind to your wallet and give you the biggest bang for your buck.  There are nearly 180 different events listed on the schedule for this year’s Seattle Beer Week already, and there’s still a month to go.  Deciding which event(s) to attend can be a challenging task.  There’s often more than one event I’d like to attend happening at the same time, and usually on opposite ends of town.

Last time, I listed just one event per day.  This time, however, I’ll list two different events for each day of SBW, but you’ll have to decide which one(s) to hit.  Hard choices sometimes have to be made.

Craft Beer Monger’s Picks For Seattle Beer Week 2014

SWB2014HopHeadsBanner1

Back in 2008, a few friends (including Ian Roberts, Matthew Younts and Mike Baker) were wandering around the Great American Beer Festival in Denver and realized how many of the great beers they were seeing there were from the Pacific Northwest.  That simple realization became the spark that helped them decide Seattle needed its own annual celebration of all things craft beer.  Less than a year later, Seattle Beer Week was born.

Kicking off in 2009, Seattle Beer Week (SBW) has grown steadily each year.  This year there are well over 300 different events, spanning 11 days.  That’s incredible.  The first Seattle Beer Week that I attended and covered was the 3rd annual, in 2011.  That year, there were fewer than 200 total events – still a very respectable number for such a young festival.

With so much going on over the 11 days of Seattle Beer Week, from May 8th to May 18th, you’ll want to take a little time to look over the complete list of events on Seattle Beer Week’s website, and decide which ones you’d like to attend.  If you’re entertaining notions of attending every single event, you can abandon them now.  Unless you have the ability to teleport and/or replicate yourself, as well as the ability to drink more beer than any human being would likely be able to consume safely, then you’re pretty much out of luck.
