Do IPAs have a season? Years ago, I used to think of the IPA as a bit more of a Spring/Summer beer, but their unrelenting popularity and proliferation has allowed the IPA to defy any kind of seasonal constraints. As the #1 most popular, style of craft beer that makes sense and explains why it’s so easy to find IPAs on tap all the time, and pretty much anywhere you go.
Fort George Brewing Company out of Astoria, Oregon clearly understands this demand for IPAs. In addition to all their other great IPAs, each year since 2013 Fort George has searched for other breweries to collaborate with in order to bring us that wonderful IPA known as 3-Way. Now, in collaboration with Cloudburst Brewing Company and Ruse Brewing, this year’s 3-Way is ready to make its debut.
I love the craft beer community – especially here in the Northwest. It goes well beyond just beer. Sure, different breweries are in competition with each other to make the best beers and to sell the most beers, but I’ve always felt that, for the most part, there’s a real feeling of kinship between many local brewers and breweries. They don’t just provide a faceless product. They become part of the greater community and, as such, care about that community.
That’s why you’re constantly seeing local craft breweries hosting events that are geared towards helping out local charities and non profits. They want to give something back to the community that’s given to them. Also, let’s face it, as a craft beer consumer it feels good to know you’re helping out by really doing nothing more than enjoying the craft beers you love. What could be better?
Back in Spring of 2016, Firestone Walker Brewing Company launched a new series of experimental IPAs under the name Luponic Distortion. Each one has been different. I’ve enjoyed some more than others, but each offering in the series is distinct and unique.
Now, two years later, Firestone has reached a milestone. They’re releasing Luponic Distortion No. 10. Are you a seasonal craft beer drinker? In other words, do you find that the style(s) of craft beers you crave tend to change with the seasons? If so, you’re not alone. As I’m sure you’re already aware, June is Pride Month and there are plenty of events all around Seattle to celebrate and stand up for the LGBTQ community. Considering the current political climate in our nation, I think that recognizing and celebrating Pride Month is more important that ever.
Pike Brewing Company feels the same way and recently released Pike Pride Ale in celebration of Seattle’s LGBTQ community. It’s available on tap now at Pike Brewing and Tankard & Tun and will be featured at several locations during Pride Week (June 18-24).
Other news from Pike includes their new Late-Night Hoppy Hour (with food specials from 9 pm to close (menu below)), a new seasonal menu at Tankard & Tun, and the exciting news that Pike has shipped over 600 unique pieces of beer art to Japan’s International Airport in Nagoya in preparation for the opening of a Pike Brewing restaurant and craft beer bar in Nagoya Airport.
At first you wouldn’t think a brewery and a barbershop would have much in common and, for the most part, you’d be right. However Rudy’s Barbershop and Reuben’s Brews, both founded in Seattle, have similar sensibilities when it comes to community and making their customers feel comfortable and at ease in their establishments.
That’s why Rudy’s has partnered with Reuben’s Brews to create a beer that celebrates their 25th anniversary. Set for release this coming Saturday, June 9th, Reuben’s well release Good Hair Day Pale Ale. A portion of the proceeds from Good Hair Day will be donated to Equal Rights Washington to help support LGBTQ rights.
In today’s America, it seems virtually impossible to escape the topic of politics. Everything seems so politically charged these days, especially with the circus going on in Washington D.C. So why fight it? Instead how about naming a beer after it?

Here in the Northwest, we take a lot of pride in our craft beers. While we recognize that there are excellent craft beers available from around the nation, most of us have a special place in our hearts (or is it livers?) for beers made in Washington State.
That’s why I’m always glad when Spring arrives and the Washington Beer Commission brings back their annual Washington Brewer’s Festival. Set this year for Friday, June 15th through Sunday June 17th at Marymoor Park in Redmond, there are a few changes you’ll want to be aware of regarding how drink tokens will work at this year’s fest.
Do you homebrew? I started homebrewing way back in the late 80’s and I have more than 25 years of homebrewing experience. Sadly though, when I moved a few years back I didn’t have a good place to brew so I actually wound up selling my 10 gallon, all-grain brewing system rather than let it sit, gathering rust and dust (I’d rather see a brewer put it to good use). I have every intention of getting back into brewing again – and on an even larger system – but I’ll have to wait a few more years before I can make that happen.
I still have a great interest in homebrewing, even though I’ve allowed me membership to the American Homebrewer’s Association lapse until I have a new system, and I’m often impressed by some of the stellar beers being produced by homebrewers today. Equipment has improved, techniques are evolving all the time and homebrewing is as popular as it ever was, if not more so. This year marks the 40th year for the National Homebrew Conference (Homebrew Con), and thousands of homebrewers from across the nation will come together in Portland this June 28 – 30 to talk homebrewing, attend workshops, learn new techniques and more.
