Bale Breaker announces the Harvest Collaboration Series

Collaborations are all the rage these days.  I recently told you about the Samuel Adams Brewing The American Dream Collaboration Pack and this year’s 3-Way IPA from Fort George Brewing (plus Great Notion Brewing and Reuben’s Brews) has been flying off shelves so fast that it’s been a bit difficult to find this year.

Now, Bale Breaker Brewing Company is ready to get in on the action.  They’ve partnered with Georgetown Brewing, Founders Brewing, Cloudburst Brewing and Pinthouse Pizza & Brewpub to create the Harvest Series Collaboration Series.  The beers have staggered release date from August through October.

Chainline Brewing & Georgetown Brewing Prepare To Release Their Bunk Beds Collaboration

The majority of the craft beer styles we all love to enjoy are Ales.  Pales, IPAs, Stouts, Porters, Browns, Barleywines, Kolschs, Saisons, Lambics and more are all types of Ales.  When most people think of Lagers, they tend to, unfortunately, think of beers like Budweiser, Miller, Corona and the like.  While these brands are lagers (mass-produced, low-quality adjunct Lagers), don’t forget that most classic German beers are also Lagers. They include such classic styles as: Pilsner, Märzen/Oktoberfest, Bock/Doppelbock, Maibock, Helles Lager, Rauchbier and more.

There are also more American style Lagers such as Malt Liquor, Steam Beer (such as Anchor Steam*), Imperial Pilsner as well as Pale Lager and India Pale Lager, which are primarily intended to be lighter bodied versions of their Ale counterparts.  Creating a Pale Lager or India Pale Lager is quite similar to creating a Pale Ale or India Pale Ale, the main difference being the type of yeast used and, of course, the fermentation temperature.  Ales like things a bit warmer (mid to high 60’s), while Lagers like things a bit cooler (mid to high 30’s).

The South Seattle Brewery Coalition Wants You To “Be Disloyal”

Since I live in the South end, I’ve been a bit of an advocate for Seattle’s many South end breweries.  Back in 2015 I even published an article encouraging craft beer lovers to check out all of the breweries in SoDo, Georgetown, South Park and Columbia City. As I pointed out in that article, the South end rivals Ballard for the sheer number of breweries you can visit, albeit spread out a bit more than the concentration in Ballard.

In order to continue encouraging craft beer fans to visit Seattle’s South end breweries, they have come together to form the South Seattle Brewery Coalition (SSBC), which encourages you to “be disloyal” and drink someone else’s beer.  According to the SSBC: “We love challenging one another to make better beer, to provide more excellent service, and to better educate the wonderful people who have chosen to support our businesses.”

Beer Church IPA Arrives This Saturday

If there’s two things Seattle area breweries do well, besides brewing great craft beers of course, it’s collaboration and doing what they can to benefit worthwhile charitable causes.  That’s what Beer Church is all about.

This year, Beer Church has teamed up with Georgetown Brewing Company (recent winner of the GABF Gold Medal for their Bodhizafa IPA), Airways Brewing Company (CBM Sponsor), Big Al Brewing Company and Two Beers Brewing Company (CBM Sponsor) to brew this year’s Beer Church IPA.  Proceeds from this beer will go to benefit the the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America.

Good Food & Drinks At Moctezuma’s

There’s more to life than just beer.  Yep, I said it, and it’s true.  Sometimes, even someone who loves craft beer as much as I do needs a change of pace.  Also, since I love Mexican food – both traditional and Tex-Mex, a good Margarita and perhaps a shot of tequila or two is something I always enjoy.

This past Saturday, my wife Lynn and I were in the mood to go out for dinner and a few drinks, so we headed to Moctezuma’s Mexican Restaurant and Tequila Bar at the Southcenter Mall, who had learned about my interest when I emailed them with a Margarita question, and graciously offered to buy us dinner and drinks.  Moctezuma’s also has locations in Tacoma, Gig Harbor and a new location coming soon in Silverdale.  The Tacoma location was their first, having been opened back in 1978 by Arturo and Magdelena Garcia.  Their son, Bernie, took the reigns from Mom & Dad and is the one responsible for their continued success and expansion.

Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood gets a lot of attention for the number of breweries in such a small area, and rightly so.  Ballard has, to many, become known as Seattle’s ‘Brewery District’.  The South End however, if you include SoDo, Georgetown and South Park, actually rivals Ballard in the number of available breweries to visit.  There’s even more if you include the Columbia City area of Rainier Avenue South.

SoDo has Two Beers Brewing (CBM Sponsor), Schooner Exact Brewing, Ghostfish Brewing (Gluten Free), Epic Ales (recently closed for transition to ‘Molusk‘) and Seapine Brewing. Georgetown has Machine House Brewing, Counterbalance Brewing and, of course, Georgetown Brewing.  Cross the first street bridge into South Park and you’ll find Burdick Brewery, Lowercase Brewing and Tin Dog Brewing.  Head the other direction towards the Rainier Valley and you’ll find Spinnaker Bay Brewing and Flying Lion Brewing.

Bob’s Brown Ale BBQ Fundraiser Coming In July

If you’re from the Seattle area and you enjoy Georgetown Brewing Company‘s beers, then there’s a good chance you know the story behind Bob’s Brown Ale.  For those of you who aren’t aware, Bob’s Brown Ale is a special beer that Georgetown brews just once a year, in honor of their dearly departed friend, Charles ‘Bob’ Hirsch.  Bob was a child fighting cancer at Ronald McDonald House and Georgetown’s own Manny Chao was Bob’s camp counselor at Camp Goodtimes.

After Bob lost his battle, Georgetown wanted to help others in need.  So they donate 100% of the proceeds from the sale of Bob’s Brown Ale each year to the Ronald McDonald Charities of Western Washington and Alaska.  For this special event, The Westin Bellevue is donating all of their proceeds for this special release of Bob’s Brown to Ronald McDonald House Charities as well.

The holiday season kind of snuck up on me this year.  Just yesterday, my wife and I had to go out to run a few errands and we were amazed at how large the holiday shopping crowds were.  Granted, it was pretty nice out this weekend; cold but sunny and clear, so I suppose there were a lot of people trying to get a jump on their shopping.

As busy as everyone gets this time of year with family, shopping and general holiday preparations, it’s important to schedule a few diversions; y’know, to get your mind off all the happy, merry, cheery, I’m going to go insane if I hear ‘Jingle Bells’ one more time, omnipresence of the season.  To help you out on that front, here are 10 great craft beer events coming up between tomorrow, November 18th and Thursday, December 18th, just one week before Christmas.

12 Breweries, 5 Events And Triple The IPA Goodness – UPDATED 2/10

India Pale Ale was originally brewed with just slightly higher alcohol and more hops than standard Pale Ales or Porters of the day.  People often believe that the IPA style was specifically formulated with much higher alcohol and higher hop concentration, in order to help the beer survive the long (4 month) voyage from England to India.  However, the myth that IPA was far higher in alcohol or that it needed that higher alcohol and/or higher hop concentration to survive the journey has been debunked.  After all, Porters and even standard Pale Ales were able to make the same trip just fine without spoilage.

Even so, the IPA style continued to grow in popularity and has evolved considerably since it’s first appearance in England in the mid 18th century.  Today, American craft brewers have really taken the IPA style and run with it.  They’ve diversified the style with several different varieties of hops, increased the level of alcohol and the amount of hops used, and eventually created the Double or Imperial IPA and, later, the Triple IPA.
