Cold Snap limited release White Ale from Sam Adams has been around since 2014. Loaded with a plethora of spices, including orange zest, vanilla and other adjuncts, Cold Snap is a light and tasty Winter warmer.
The recipe for Cold Snap has been the same since 2014 – until now that is. Sam Adams has tweaked the recipe for the 2020 release, to make Cold Snap even more refreshing that before.

(Dec. 19, 2019) –– Portland Cider Co., one of Oregon’s longest operating independent cider producers, recently brought home two double gold medals for its flagship Sorta Sweet cider; the first from Sip Northwest‘s 2019 Best of the Northwest Cider, and the second from the 2019 Cidercraft Awards.
Portland Cider Co.’s Sorta Sweet is a love song to the Oregon craft cider movement and the company’s most award-winning cider. It’s semi-sweet, refreshing and effervescent, and balances the higher levels of natural residual sugars with just the right amount of tartness. Available year-round, Sorta Sweet offers a fresh finish that tastes like biting into a crisp apple. It has won more than a dozen medals in the last seven years, including two double golds and a few silver medals in 2019.
As I recently mentioned in another article here on CraftBeerMonger.com, Cascade Brewing Company in Portland, Oregon has, for years, set the gold standard for Sour Ales produced in the Pacific Northwest. They’ve been producing outstanding Sour Ales since 2006 and I can honestly say I’ve never had a beer from them that I don’t like.
Most craft beer lovers I know have at least a few Cascade bottles in their cellar. If you don’t, or if you’d like to make your cellar a bit more Cascade heavy, then they have an event coming up next week that you’ll want to check out. From July 22nd through July 29th, Cascade is hosting a “Raid The Cellar” event, with heavily discounted pricing on select Sour Ales.
I love a good Sour Ale. We’ve got a few breweries around the Sound producing some excellent sours (Urban Family Brewing and Engine House No. 9 are two that immediately come to mind) but, for me, the gold standard for sours from the Northwest is still Cascade Brewing Company out of Portland, Oregon.
For years, Cascade was the name that immediately sprang to mind whenever anyone asked about good sour ales from the Northwest, and with good reason. Cascade’s portfolio speaks for itself and now they’ve released their two latest creations: Ocean Views Hazy Pale and Coastal Gose. While it’s obviously not a Sour Ale, Ocean Views marks the first been Cascade has released in 16 oz cans, and it will see national distribution. Coastal Gose will release in 500ml bottles and will also be distributed nationwide.
Even though I knew it was coming, Seattle Beer Week (SBW) kind of snuck up on me this year. I can’t believe it kicks off in just 2 days! There are a few events that happen each year that I usually attend so I’m set there. However, I didn’t find much time until this past weekend to look over the rest of this year’s SBW events and choose which ones I’d either like to attend myself and/or that I’d like to suggest to you. I’m here to fix that.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m a big fan of Sour Ales. That puckering tartness they impart can be too much for some, but it tickles my palate’s fancy and I’m always ready to try a new Sour Ale. We have some great local breweries that make some truly amazing Sour Ales, but most of them are relatively new. Before their existence, the best Sour Ales around always came from Cascade Brewing Company out of Portland, Oregon.
Cascade is still tops in my book. They’re one of my favorite Northwest breweries (as my #FF tweets can attest to), and I always keep tabs on what they’re working on next. To that end, I’m pleased to share the news with you that Cascade has released their One Way Or Another 2017 project. The 2017 version is a complex Sour Ale featuring Northwest-grown marionberries and Meyer lemon zest with Sour Blond Ale aged in oak barrels for up to 16 months.
I wasn’t always a fan of Sour Ales. They weren’t a big thing when I first got into craft beer back in the 80’s but, since first discovering them several years ago, I can’t get enough. Super sour or just mildly tart, fruited or not, I’ve come to appreciate a wide variety of Sour Ales.
They weren’t the first Sour Ales I’ve ever had, but I’ve enjoyed just about every sour offering from Firestone Walker Brewing Company‘s Barrelworks series. Each year they keep expanding their wild/sour portfolio and this year is no exception. Say hello to the newest offering from Barrelworks: Bretta Tangerine. Brewed with Murcott tangerines, Bretta Tangerine is the latest beer to build on Barrelworks’ signature Bretta Weisse base beer.
Yesterday evening, I attended a preview event for Seattle’s newest brewery, Best Of Hands Barrelhouse. I first told you about Best Of Hands back at the end of January, when they announced their opening date of Friday, March 8th. Since then I’ve been eagerly anticipating the opening, and with good reason. These guys really know what they’re doing, and the beers I enjoyed yesterday proved it beyond any doubt.
If you visit The Beer Junction in West Seattle with any regularity, you may recognize two of Best Of Hands’ founders: Gregory Marlor, and Nicholas Marianetti (both are level II Certified Cicerones®). They both worked at The Beer Junction before leaving recently to launch Best Of Hands with their partner, Chris Richardson. The Beer Junction was also the first place to tap Best Of Hands’ Phantom Boots IPA last month.
Sour and Wild Ales can be an acquired taste. I know a few people who just can’t get into them, but I also know many people who simply can’t get enough of them. If you’re one of the later, then you know that some breweries just do their Sour and Wild Ales right.
One such brewery is Firestone Walker Brewing Company, who has given us several Sour/Wild gems like Agrestic, Bretta Rose, Krieky Bones and many more. Now Firestone is ready to reveal the latest offering from their Barrelworks Wild Ale series: Peachy Bones.
Of all the breweries in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood, I think I’d have to say my favorite is Reuben’s Brews. The quality and consistency of their beers are top notch and I honestly have yet to be disappointed with any of their releases. So when I heard they were getting ready to launch their first barrel-aged sours, I was intrigued and delighted.
Reuben’s has show themselves to be the masters of Rye beers, hazy and West Coast IPAs, Goses and more, so I have high hopes that their new sour Ales will be at the same high level of quality I’ve come to expect from Reuben’s. Over 17 months in the making, the first releases from their barrel-aged sour series will be “Brettania” and “Tropical Funk”.
