Two Special Releases From Counterbalance Brewing & 2bar Spirits

I’ve always been an advocate for Seattle’s South end breweries.  Living in the South end myself I, of course, spend a lot of time at these places and enjoy seeing them succeed.  A couple of years back I penned an article with some great reasons to visit Seattle’s South end breweries and, earlier this year, I told you about the newly formed South Seattle Brewery Coalition.

That’s why I was very pleased when I heard the news that Counterbalance Brewing Company had teamed up with 2bar Spirits (who also happens to be in Seattle’s South end) for a unique Whiskey/Stout collaboration.

Aging Stouts in Whiskey barrels is nothing new.  Breweries have been doing it for years and indeed Whiskey and Bourbon barrel aged Stouts are some of my favorites.  This time, however, things went a bit in the other direction.  2bar Spirits used the actual mash bill from Counterbalance’s Kushetka Imperial Stout to produce this particular Whiskey, then aged it for 2 years in 2bar Whiskey barrels.

Craft Beer Monger’s Top Picks For Seattle Beer Week #9

Maybe it’s just me, but it feels like the past year has flown by so quickly.  Seattle Beer Week #8 almost feels like it was just a few weeks ago.  Yet here we are, with Seattle Beer Week #9 kicking off in just two days.  Have you had an opportunity to look over the ever-growing list of events on the official Seattle Beer Week website?  With so many events to choose from, many of which happen on the same day or even at the same time, you may have to make some difficult choices regarding which events to attend.  Here are my top picks for Seattle Beer Week #9.

Things get under way with the Official Seattle Beer Week Kickoff this Thursday, May 4th.  There are  5 stops on the Seattle Beer Week (SBW) kickoff tour.  Things start off at 4:30 pm at the new Flatstick Pub location in Pioneer Square.  The other stops on this year’s kickoff tour include: Beveridge Place Pub (6:30 pm and Cask-O-Rama will be going on), Brouwer’s Cafe (7:45 pm), Naked City Brewery & Taphouse (9:00 pm), with the evening closing out at The Pine Box (10:30 pm).

Dine With Lark, Cloudburst & Holy Mountain During Seattle Beer Week

As I’m sure most of you already know, Seattle Beer Week kicks off next Thursday, May 4th.  Exactly one week later (but still during Seattle Beer Week, which continues until the 14th), Seattle’s premiere artisan-focused restaurant, Lark, will be hosting a gourmet beer dinner, featuring their own artisan cuisine and beers from two of Seattle’s newest and hottest breweries: Cloudburst Brewing and Holy Mountain Brewing.

This is just one of several dinners you’ll find listed on the events page for Seattle Beer Week, but this is the only one where you can enjoy Chef John Sundstrom’s gourmet offerings of locally-produced and organic cheese, charcuterie, vegetables, grains, fish, and meats, all prepared in season, as well as beers from both Cloudburst and Holy Mountain.

Top Rung Brewing Prepares For Their Third Anniversary

What do you do when you’re a firefighter with a passion for craft beer and you’re looking for a hobby to keep you busy in your down-time?  You start homebrewing, of course.  At least that’s how things got started for Top Rung Brewing Company founders, Jason Stoltz and Casey Sobol.

First opened in April of 2014, Jason and Casey launched Top Rung to fill a need they saw for more craft beer choices in the Olympia area.  Now, they’re preparing for their third anniversary celebration.

Celebrate National Beer Day With Elysian Brewing & The Return Of Superfuzz

It seems these days, there’s a ‘National’ day of… well, just about anything.  We’ve got National Rotisserie Chicken Day (June 2nd), National Golf Lovers Day (October 4th), heck there’s even a National Day The Music Died day.  It can be difficult to keep track of all those ‘National’ days out there but, if you’re a craft beer lover like me, there’s only a few you have to worry about.

One of the big ones that should be on your radar is National Beer Day, which takes place in just over one week on Friday, April 7th.  Breweries and craft beer bars around the nation will be celebrating, and I’m here to tell you about a few  selections coming your way from Elysian Brewing Company for this special day, as well as the return of a Seasonal favorite: Superfuzz Blood Orange Pale Ale.

Spring has finally arrived in the Northwest and that means, of course, the return of baseball.  For the past few years, I’ve kept you up to date on what delicious craft beers and gourmet food choices you can expect to find each Seattle Mariners season at Safeco Field.

Well, it’s that time again and I’ve been invited back to check out some new offerings for this year’s menu. Fall Line Russian Imperial Stout Returns Today From Two Beers Brewing

fallline2017poster2-0

I’m a fan of all different styles of craft beer, but I think my two favorite styles are barrel aged Stouts and IPAs (actually, double IPAs).  So, whenever I hear of an impending barrel aged Stout release, I get a little excited.

Unfortunately, since I’m currently doing a dry 30 days (no alcohol from January 26th to February 25th), I won’t be able to enjoy the latest Alta Series release from Two Beers Brewing Company (CBM Sponsor) until this Saturday.  For the rest of you, however, drop by The Woods today when they open their doors at 3 pm and grab yourself a few bottles of Fall Line Russian Imperial Stout. They’ll also have it on tap for you to enjoy.

Bravo Is Coming In 12 oz Bottles From Firestone Walker

Firestone Walker Logo

Firestone Walker Brewing Company has been quite busy lately.  They introduced their new Luponic Distortion series of IPAs. They discontinued their Proprietor’s Reserve Series of beers (including: Opal, Double Jack and Wookey Jack), and they recently celebrated their 20th Anniversary including, of course, the release of their XX Anniversary Ale.

Now, Firestone Walker is ready for another first.  All of Firestone Walker’s Vintage Reserve barrel-aged beers will be moving from from 22-ounce bombers to individually boxed 12-ounce bottles. The first beer up for the 12-ounce treatment is Bravo Imperial Brown Ale, which is being bottled for the first time in 12 years.

Reuben’s Brews Reveals Their 2017 Release Calendar

These days, lining up for coveted craft beer releases has become a way of life here in Seattle.  Over the past year, I’ve waited in line for the release of at least 7 or 8 different beers – probably more.  The wait in line isn’t only about the beer though.  For many of these releases I could have skipped the line, come in later and still gotten my bottles, but then I would have missed the opportunity to hang out with all my friends who also attend these releases.

Half the battle during bottle releases or when anticipating the return of your favorite on-tap selections, however, is knowing when they’re coming.  Often times we don’t hear about a particular release until just a few days before it happens, meaning we may have to alter our plans or find a friend to pick up a few bottles, cans or growler fills for us if we can’t attend.  That’s why having a release calendar can really help.  To that end, Reuben’s Brews has just revealed their 2017 release calendar.

Two Beers Brewing Prepares For Their 9th Anniversary

tb-9thanniversaryposter2-2

It’s time once again to celebrate at Two Beers Brewing Company (CBM Sponsor).  Coming up just one week from tomorrow, Saturday, November 5th, Two Beers Brewing will celebrate their 9th Anniversary from 1 pm to 7 pm.  For this year’s Anniversary celebration, Two Beers is revisiting their past a bit.  They’ve dug into both their pantry and their cellar to bring back some special cask infusions that were more prevalent during the previous iteration of The Woods taproom, as well as some vertical tastings of their Alta Series’ beers, including the now retired Ascension 2013, High Divide 2013 among others.

Also returning in time for the Anniversary celebration is Two Beers’ popular Jive Espresso Stout, and they will be debuting the latest addition to their lineup: Tipsy Toboggan Winter Ale.  This Winter Warmer comes in at 6.8% and will be available on draft and in 12 oz cans starting on November 5th.
