Craft Beer Monger’s Top Picks For Seattle Beer Week #9

Maybe it’s just me, but it feels like the past year has flown by so quickly.  Seattle Beer Week #8 almost feels like it was just a few weeks ago.  Yet here we are, with Seattle Beer Week #9 kicking off in just two days.  Have you had an opportunity to look over the ever-growing list of events on the official Seattle Beer Week website?  With so many events to choose from, many of which happen on the same day or even at the same time, you may have to make some difficult choices regarding which events to attend.  Here are my top picks for Seattle Beer Week #9.

Things get under way with the Official Seattle Beer Week Kickoff this Thursday, May 4th.  There are  5 stops on the Seattle Beer Week (SBW) kickoff tour.  Things start off at 4:30 pm at the new Flatstick Pub location in Pioneer Square.  The other stops on this year’s kickoff tour include: Beveridge Place Pub (6:30 pm and Cask-O-Rama will be going on), Brouwer’s Cafe (7:45 pm), Naked City Brewery & Taphouse (9:00 pm), with the evening closing out at The Pine Box (10:30 pm).

Two Beers Partners With Anchorhead Coffee For The Return Of Their Cold Brew Coffee Brown Ale

coldbrew2017poster

Back in early 2015, I first told you about the debut of Cold Brew Coffee Brown Ale from Two Beers Brewing Company (CBM Sponsor).  It’s coffee-forward aroma and flavor are the perfect marriage of two quintessentially Seattle flavors: coffee and craft beer. Available seasonally from late Winter through Spring, Cold Brew Coffee Brown Ale is low in acidity and subtly sweet.

For this year’s iteration of Cold Brew, Two Beers has partnered with Seattle’s own Anchorhead Coffee. According to Two Beers’ founder, Joel VandenBrink: “Their unique roasting process and the flavors that shine through make this beer one of our favorites, and perfect for everything from brunch to backpacking.”

A Look Back At The Waterways Cruises/Pike Brewing Dinner Cruise

15235602_10210025092296018_2646400766667409391_o

Last Friday, December 2nd, my wife and I attended a beer tasting dinner cruise courtesy of Waterways Cruises And Events, featuring beers from Pike Brewing Company.  This is the cruise I told you about just last month, which took us around Lake Union and Lake Washington as we enjoyed 5 different Pike Brewing Company beers and enjoyed a delicious, 4-course dinner.

Apart from a few somewhat loud and annoying shipmates at the next table and a small technical difficulty involving the last beer of the evening, we had a great meal and a wonderful time.  As a special bonus that we weren’t expecting, Charles and Rose Ann Finkel, founders of Pike Brewing Company, were in attendance on the cruise (as well Pike’s Jon Gores).  Charles took the time to visit each and every table, and spoke to us all at length about his passion for beer, Pike Brewing Company and the beers we would be enjoying during the cruise.

Gunpowder Plot Returns From Black Raven Brewing

GunpowderPlot2015

I love this time of year.  I may be a serious hophead (I’ve been in hop-lovers Heaven this fresh-hop Season), but I think most of my favorite craft beers are still dark beers.  When Stout, Porter and Winter Lager season rolls back around, you’ll always find me with a big smile on my face.

Well, Black Raven Brewing Company (CBM Sponsor) is helping me out with that Winter beer smile.  Just two weeks ago they released Grandfather Raven Imperial Stout.  Last week they brought us Frost Beak Winter Lager and now, set for release this coming Saturday the 5th, is their Gunpowder Plot Nitro Porter.  Brewed to commemorate Guy Fawkes Day, Gunpowder Plot is rich and complex.  Brewed with bourbon-soaked coffee beans and cocoa nibs and served on Nitro, its a true pleasure to the palate.

Nearing The Halfway Point Of Seattle Beer Week #8 – UPDATED

20160513_092720

Today, Monday May 16th, is day number 5 of Seattle Beer Week #8, which means we’re about halfway through.  Things kicked off last Thursday at Reuben’s Brews with the official tapping of the first keg of the official Seattle Beer Week beer: Daily Pale, followed by the opening night pub crawl.  I had to drop by Reuben’s, of course, for the kickoff and then found my way to Beveridge Place Pub for stop #3 on the crawl.

Since then, the events have been coming pretty much non-stop.  The highlights for me so far have been the Underberg Back In Black Stout Fest at Brouwer’s Cafe, Satanic Metal C.O.W. Night at Toronado and, even though I had to leave a bit early, Firestone Walker & Holy Mountain last night at The Pine Box.

Seattle Beer Week Kicks Off Today

I don’t know about you, but I’ve had a pretty crazy last week or so leading up to Seattle Beer Week #8.  Between being busy at work (both of them), still mourning a bit for our dog, Bailei, and trying to plan out my Seattle Beer Week 2016 schedule (picking from, literally, hundreds of events), I’ve barely had time to breathe.

The event list for Seattle Beer Week seems to get a bit bigger each year.  There are always a few days where there are at least 2 or 3 different events all happening at the same time on opposite ends of town, so you have to make a choice.  Hitting every single event is absolutely impossible (and severe liver abuse!), so you have to pick your battles (or is it bottles?)

Now, it’s here.  Seattle Beer Week kicks off this evening at Reuben’s Brews in Ballard.  They’ll be open at noon today, but the official opening ceremony for Seattle Beer Week won’t take place until 5 pm.  The first keg of Daily Pale, the official beer of Seattle Beer Week #8, will be tapped and the Mayor’s Proclamation will be read.

Just in case you’d forgotten, Mother’s Day is this coming Sunday.  Haven’t made plans yet to do something special for mom?  No need to panic.  You’ve still got time to make reservations for the Watershed Pub & Kitchen‘s 2nd Annual Mother’s Day Brunch Buffet.

This year, instead of the usual, boring flowers and a card, give mom the gift of starting the day off with a hearty breakfast.  After all, she used to spend much of her time feeding you, right?  Why not return the favor?

Gunpowder Plot Nitro Porter Is Back Tomorrow From Black Raven

GunpowderPlot2015

The time has come once again to “Remember, remember the 5th of November, the gunpowder, treason and plot.  I know of no reason why the gunpowder treason should ever be forgot.”  Black Raven Brewing Company (CBM Sponsor) can’t think of a reason either so, back once again for 2015, is their Gunpowder Plot Nitro Porter.  Releasing tomorrow, November 5th, of course, this coffee, cocoa and bourbon-infused ale comes in at 6.9%.

Food And Drink Preview For The 2015 Mariners Season At Safeco Field

IMG_2055

Today I was invited to join a group of several other local journalists down at Safeco Field for an in-depth preview of the new food and drink options that will be available for the 2015 Seattle Mariners season.  With the home opener coming up in just five days, this was a great opportunity to get a sneak peek at all the new high-end food and drink options that Mariners fans will have the opportunity to enjoy at the Safe this year.

Last year’s offerings included delicious choices like Apple Wood Smoked Salmon Chowder, ‘Dirty’ Tots With Beecher’s Flagship Cheddar, Carlton Farms Pork Belly & Bay Valley Picked Peppers, and Fish & Chips With Manny’s Pale Ale Batter among other selections; plus cask beers from local Northwest breweries like Georgetown Brewing CompanyOakshire Brewing Company and others.

This year I was eager to return and try some of the new choices chef Ethan Stowell and his team had come up with, and to sample a few of the new craft beer choices available this season.  The featured brewery at Safeco this season is Seattle’s own Pike Brewing Company, but you’ll also find options from other local breweries like Black Raven Brewing (CBM Sponsor), Schooner Exact BrewingFremont Brewing and many more.
