Splinters Returns From Black Raven Brewing

More often than not in the craft beer World, it seems like hops are the big stars.  Much of this is due to the fact that IPA is still king when it comes to craft beer and, while I still enjoy drinking IPAs through the Fall and Winter, I really start to appreciate the complex malt character of less hop forward beers like Stouts, Porters and Scotch Ales to name a few.  I also enjoy many beers that have been barrel aged in Whiskey, Bourbon, Scotch or other barrels and, let’s face it, there aren’t that many barrel aged IPAs out there (though they do exist).

I’m also rather picky about my Scotch Ales.  There are only a few locally made Scotch Ales that I really enjoy, and one of them is Second Sight from Black Raven Brewing Company (CBM Sponsor).  Now, Black Raven is preparing to release Second Sight’s more mature brother, Splinters Bourbon Barrel Aged Scotch Ale.

Here is some more information about this release from Black Raven Brewing Company:

Splinters 2018
Bourbon Barrel Aged Scotch Ale
Release date: Friday, November 9th
Splinters is the bourbon barrel aged version of our Second Sight Strong Scotch Ale. Aged for many months in various bourbon barrels, Splinters picks up the best of the barrel for added complexity of flavor. All of the barrels are then combined and the beer is aged for another month in a stainless steel tank to meld and mature. This beer is a limited release seasonal that is produced and bottled annually.
This years blend is 50% Heaven Hills Distillery (KY) and 50% Westland Distillery (WA).

ABV: 10.8%

On draft and 22oz bottles available to go $16.99 + tax (1 case limit)

I still have a few bottles of Splinters in my cellar from previous year’s releases, and I’m sure I’ll be picking up some of this year’s batch to add to my collection.  If you’re a fan of good Scotch Ales and a fan of Whiskey/Bourbon barrel aged beers, I highly recommend you pick up some Splinters when it arrives this coming Friday the 9th.

Also, in case you weren’t aware, Black Raven also just released their extremely popular Gunpowder Plot Nitro Porter – released each year on November 5th.  If you find some on tap at one of your favorite local craft beer spots, I strongly suggest giving it a try.

Drink responsibly and stay safe out there.
