Since I live in South end, I’ve always been a bit of an advocate for Seattle’s South end breweries. Back in 2015 I even published an article outlining some great reasons to visit some of Seattle’s South end breweries. In that article I made the observation that, if you include SoDo, Georgetown and Columbia City, the South end (even though it’s more spread out) actually has more breweries than Ballard.
Sheer numbers aside, however, I’ve become a big fan of several of Seattle’s South end breweries, including Counterbalance Brewing Company. First launched in February 2015, Counterbalance puts out some excellent beers. One of my favorites is their Bad Wolf Dark Ale (so I’m excited for their Big Bag Wolf Dark Strong 2nd Anniversary Ale), but they also make a great IPA (which actually made it to the final round in this year’s House IPA competition for Beveridge Place Pub) and a delicious Russian Imperial Stout that gets even better when they barrel age it. Now, Counterbalance is getting ready to celebrate their 2nd Anniversary.
Here is a bit more information from Counterbalance Brewing Company:
Seattle, WA (February 2017)–Counterbalance Brewing Company 2nd Anniversary
Join us Friday and Saturday, February 10-11 for our 2nd Anniversary! Counterbalance Brewing will probably only turn two once, and like any singular occasion, if you miss it, you’ll never get it back.
New beers, special taproom-only beers, the return of some old friends, and aged beers will rotate on tap throughout the weekend, including the release of Big Bad Wolf Dark Strong Ale, our Second Anniversary Ale. The Big Bad Wolf is a jacked up version of Bad Wolf Dark Ale with cascara (dried coffee cherries) from our friends at Caffe Ladro, coming in at 10.3% abv.
Owner/brewers will be pouring beers Friday and food trucks onsite include Nacho Mama’s Food Truck (Friday) and Woodshop BBQ (Saturday). The Counterbalance taproom is open to all ages.
Counterbalance Brewing Company, owned and operated by Jeff Howell and Frank Lawrence, opened its doors and launched wholesale distribution in February 2015. Counterbalance beers are distributed to bars, restaurants, and retail locations throughout Washington by Vinum Importing & Distributing.

Counterbalance also collaborated recently with Lowercase Brewing to brew a Coffee Biere de Garde, which was on tap at Lowercase’s recent anniversary celebration. Perhaps Counterbalance will have some on tap for their Anniversary as well. Mark your calendar now and plan on coming down to Georgetown on the 10th and/or 11th to help Counterbalance celebrate. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to make it because I’ve planned on a dry February this year, so I’ll have to see if Jeff and Frank can hold me some of that Big Bad Wolf. It sounds delicious.
Drink responsibly and stay safe out there.

I’m so sad, I’ll be out of town for this! But that doesn’t mean you can’t get down to Counterbalance Brewing to check out some of their great beer!
