The winners have just been announced for the 2016 US Open Beer Championship. Unique in it’s format, the US Open Beer Championship is the only brewing competition to allow award winning home brewers to compete against commercial breweries Worldwide. Beers from 95 different categories (including non-alcoholic) were ranked and the top 10 breweries and medal winners were also listed.
Four different breweries from Washington State took home awards, including: Reuben’s Brews, Heathen Brewing Company, Icicle Brewing Company and a sweep in the gluten free category by Ghostfish Brewing Company. Congratulations to all the winners. I’d also like to offer a special congratulations one of my favorite breweries, Firestone Walker Brewing Company, for being named National Grand Champion (details below).
Here is some more information about the awards from the US Open Beer Championship:
Oxford, OH (July 11, 2016) – Breweries from Maui to Munich sent in almost 5,000 beers representing over 90 different styles for the 2016 U.S. Open Beer Championship. This competition includes professional breweries and award-winning home-brewers. Today, U.S. Open judges from England, Canada and the United States announced the winners. The full winner’s list can be found at U.S. Open Winners List.
Firestone Walker Brewing from Paso Robles, CA was named Grand National Champion by winning three gold medals, one silver medal and a bronze. Their three beers that were awarded gold medals were Union Jack IPA, Double Jack and Parabajava.
Melvin Brewing from Jackson, Wyoming placed second while Cigar City Brewing from Tampa, Florida took home third.
Judging in the U.S. Open Beer Championships is blind; the judges do not know what beers they are tasting. The final round of judging was held at the Quarter Barrel Brewery & Pub in Oxford, Ohio.
Here is this year’s list of Top 10 Breweries:
1. Firestone Walker Brewing – California
2. Melvin Brewing (Jackson) – Wyoming
3. Cigar City Brewing – Florida
4. Red Hare Brewing – Georgia
5. Cherry Street Brewing Cooperative – Georgia
6. Brew Bus Brewing – Florida
7. Track 7 Brewing – California
8. Guadalupe Brewing – Texas
9. Latitude 42 Brewing – Michigan
10. Elm City Brewing – New Hampshire
10. Rahr & Sons Brewing – Texas
I’m very happy to see Melvin Brewing Company in the #2 spot behind Firestone Walker. Melvin is relatively new to Washington State, but I’ve been most impressed with everything I’ve had from them so far. You can see the full list of 2106 winners from all 95 categories HERE. Look over the list and you might discover a few new beers to try (not all winners are distributed to Washington State, of course).
Drink responsibly and stay safe out there.
