The Washington Hop Mob Triple IPA Roadshow Returns For A Second Year

We may be well into Winter in the great Northwest (Dang it’s cold out there!), and that currently has me deeply engrossed in lots of dark, rich, roasty, chocolaty, delicious Porters and Stouts – especially the bourbon barrel aged variety, but that doesn’t mean I don’t still enjoy the occasional hoppy and satisfying IPA.  A hophead like me can never go too long without one.  In fact, I think I’ll make my next one a Double IPA just for good measure.  I like ’em strong and quite hoppy.  I’d have a Triple IPA, but they’re a bit more difficult to track down this time of year.  That will change, however, in just a few short months.

Last February I told you about a unique new series of events dubbed the Hop Mob Triple IPA Roadshow.  It was a celebration of the relatively new and still unofficial style, the Triple IPA.  Featuring 12 different breweries and spanning 5 events around the Sound from Lynnwood down to Tacoma, the Roadshow was a great way to explore this strong and hop-heavy style of craft beer.  Well, the Roadshow is back for 2014 with more breweries, more events and even more Triple IPA goodness.

A Celebration of Washington’s Biggest and Hoppiest Brews

The 2nd Annual Washington Hop Mob Triple IPA Roadshow celebrates hoppy beers and showcases the talents of Washington’s breweries. Expanded this year to include more breweries and more events.

(Seattle – December 29, 2014) The 2nd Annual Washington Hop Mob Triple IPA Roadshow (Hop Mob) is a two-week celebration of the hoppiest of all Washington-brewed beer styles. This year more than 30 Washington breweries signed up to produce special batches of Triple IPA to pour at a series of events around the Puget Sound region between February 6 and February 21. Washington Hop Mob Triple IPA Roadshow is produced by First Draft Production and the Washington Beer Blog, on behalf of the Washington Brewers Guild.

The series of events begins with the official Hop Mob Kickoff at Brouwer’s Café in Seattle on Friday, February 6 and concludes with the Hop Mob Finale at Pike Brewing in Seattle on Saturday, February 21. Sandwiched between those dates, five beer-focused bars around the Puget Sound area host Hop Mob Roadshow events. The Hop Mob Kickoff and the Hop Mob Finale will each feature over 30 Triple IPAs on tap—all of the Hop Mob beers. Each Hop Mob Roadshow event features at least a dozen of the beers on tap. Event dates and details are provided below and also on the official website,

The events showcases Washington-brewed Triple IPAs, perhaps the most boldly hoppy of all beer styles. Typically this style of beer weighs in at more than 10 percent Alcohol by Volume and features profound hop character, whether in the form of bitterness, aroma, or both.

“Triple IPA is a difficult style of beer to master and breweries that do it well are highly revered,” says Kim Sharpe Jones of the Washington Beer Blog, which is helping organize and promote the events. “Some out-of-state Triple IPAs get an enormous amount of attention and cause beer enthusiasts to swoon like preteens at a One Direction concert. Our goal with Hop Mob is to show that Washington’s brewers can produce beers that stand shoulder-to-shoulder with any of those ballyhooed, out-of-state beers. Also, it’s a great excuse to drink some really excellent stuff.”

To brew a good Triple IPA, brewers use a substantial amount of malted barley, which provides the elevated alcohol content. To balance-out the malty sweetness and give the beer its requisite hoppy character, brewers rely on substantial quantities of hops. In Washington, hops are more than an ingredient; they’re a way of life. The Yakima Valley produces between 75 and 80 percent of the nation’s hop crop each year and some of the farms are operated by families that have grown hops for four and five generations.

This year’s Hop Mob Triple IPA Roadshow is even bigger and better than last year’s.  It will feature 7 big events, including the kickoff at Brouwer’s Cafe on Friday, February 6th and the finale at Pike Brewing Company on Saturday, February 21st, and 31 participating breweries – a significant jump from the 12 breweries that participated last year.  That’s a lot of Triple IPAs!
