It’s Almost Barleywine Season At Beveridge Place Pub And Brouwer’s Cafe – UPDATED 2/26

Last month, I told you about the 12th Annual Hard Liver Barleywine Festival coming to Brouwer’s Café on Saturday, March 15th.  Now, Beveridge Place Pub has announced the kickoff date for their 12th Annual Barleywine Bacchanal.  Starting on Saturday, March 1st and continuing until Friday, March 7th, or until they run out, this bodacious bastion of barleywine bacchanalia will have well over 50 different barleywines on tap for you to enjoy.  At least 30 of Beveridge Place Pub’s taps will be taken over during the Bacchanal, but you’ll have to visit more than once if you want to try them all.

Here is the anticipated tap list for the 12th Annual Barleywine Bacchanal:

Beveridge Place has also advised us to be on the lookout for special announcements of rare, vertical tastings of some of these selections.  For those who don’t know, a vertical tasting means you’ll be tasting different vintages (years) of the same barleywine.  This is a great way to explore a particular brewery’s barleywine in-depth, to see how it changes and matures as it ages.

How you chose to enjoy all the barleywines on this list is up to you.  You can visit Beveridge Place multiple times during the week and have just a few each time, but this carries the risk of missing out on some of the more popular choices if the kegs are depleted.  Alternatively, you can try to taste as many as possible by ordering a taster tray (or two or three – did you bring a designated driver?), which allows you to try smaller pours of six different selections per tray.  For optimum olfactory and gustatory enjoyment, or unless you have some specific, known favorites that you want to stick with, I recommend the diversity offered by the taster tray route.

Then, just one week after the close of Beveridge Place Pub’s Barleywine Bacchanal on March 8th is the kickoff of the 12th Annual Hard Liver Barleywine Festival at Brouwer’s Café on Saturday, March 15th.  The tap list for this year’s festival has not yet been announced by Brouwer’s, but check back as I will update this article as soon as the information becomes available.

All 57 taps at Brouwer’s Café will be taken over for the festival, and they’ll keep on pouring until all the kegs are drained.  The Hard Liver Barleywine Festival is a very popular annual event in Seattle, drawing quite a crowd.  You can expect a line to form at least a hour (likely more) before Brouwer’s opens their doors at 11 AM on Friday, Saturday and possibly Sunday as well.  As usual, you’ll be able to order 3oz, 6oz or 12oz pours of each selection.  Order smaller pours to try more choices or larger pours for any known or newfound favorites.  You can also expect to see a few menu specials to accompany these delicious, high-octane brews.

Hard Liver 2013

I plan on attending both the Barleywine Bacchanal at Beveridge Place Pub and the Hard Liver Barleywine Festival at Brouwer’s Café.  For the past few years, I have been fortunate to be selected as a judge for the Hard Liver festival at Brouwer’s.  I hope to enjoy that same privilege again this year as I really do enjoy judging such a diverse style as Barleywines.  I’ll see you there.

Drink responsibly and stay safe out there.
