Spring has arrived in the Northwest (though Winter gave us one more good blast with last week’s snow). That means it’s time to prepare to leave many of those wonderful Winter beers behind until next year and get ready for some Spring and Summer styles; and one of my favorite styles, as my regular readers well know, is India Pale Ale (and Imperial/Double IPA). So I’m excited about the approach of April and the kickoff of the annual IPApril at Beveridge Palce Pub.
This month-long event brings together some of the best IPA’s available in the Northwest, from across all IPA-related styles. According to Beveridge Place Pub:
All month long we’ll be serving up a hopheads delight, with twenty taps running at 60+ IBUs! IPAs, Imperial IPAs, Belgian IPAs, Double IPAs, Black IPAs, Single Hop IPAs, we’ll have them all (or as many as you can safely consume) for the entire month of April!
You can order your IPAs by the pint or get a taster tray. As with previous IPApril events, expect to see several blind tastings, allowing you to sample and vote for your favorites before knowing what they are. This can be a wonderful way to discover an IPA you never knew you’d enjoy or even, perhaps, discover if you’ve been over-rating any. Using the blind rating systems at last year’s IPApril and last year’s IPA Fest at Cooper’s Alehouse (this year’s fest at Cooper’s kicks off on Friday, April 5th), I found a few pleasant surprises. Think you really know your IPAs? You can also use the blind tasting format to see if you can correctly idenfity your favorite IPAs. Test yourself and see how you did when the blind tasting lineups are revealed.
Last year, though blind tastings, I discovered that my favorite three IPAs were:
- Firestone Walker Double Jack (No surprise.)
- Black Raven Wisdom Seeker (This year’s batch is releasing now. Find the seeker!)
- Sierra Nevada Hoptimum (A pleasant surprise.)
This year I’ll have to see if my favorites hold up, or if I discover something new and wonderful. Either way, my taste buds are tingling in anticipation of all those wonderful hops.
IPApril kicks off on April 1st and runs all month long. You can bet I’ll be making several stops at Beveridge Place Pub all throughout April, to try as many different IPAs as I can. I hope to see you there. The tap list for this year’s fest has not been released yet, but I will update you when it becomes available.
From Beveridge Place Pub:
